We had them come out after the big hail storm this May. I showed them the estimates from our insurance company and they put together a bid. The bid they provided wasn't very clear and they wouldn't explain to me how it compared to what our insurance was saying they would pay.
A couple of weeks later, without any notice, another crew came to do our gutters. About a week later Joe called me to say that he had a crew that would be coming by the next day... to do our gutters and downspouts. Apparently he didn't even realize that their crew had already done the job!
Not to make things awkward, but my husband and I were the potential buyers of the home mentioned in the one star review. Carlson Projects was noting but professional and honest about the potential situation we were facing with the roof. They gave us options and in no way tried to sway us from the making the purchase. They were open and honest about the previous conversations they had with the current owners and what was needed to properly fix the issues. I would definitely contact them in the future!
The work has now been completed, and the consensus among our association members is that it has been good (our roofs are attractive and recent heavy storms have revealed no leakage or gutter problems), the crews were respectful and cleaned up well, and the price was reasonable. We received good advice in advance of the work and communication was smooth before, during, and after the project. Personally, I feel that Carlson Projects not only met but in many ways exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend them.
So, now I have a lien on my house for work I never approved and that was done poorly, plus I have a leak that I'm going to have to climb up there and fix because there's no way I'm having these guys back out. As I said before, DON'T WORK WITH THESE GUYS. Plenty of other options out there!
I am very pleased with Greg Carlson and his team, as they did all the work in our neighborhood (a total of 12 townhomes) after we suffered significant hail damage to roofs and gutters from the May 2016 storm. Our townhome group owners association approached Greg because his company had done a good job on several roof repairs in our neighborhood over the past 15 years, but now the 12 of us needed roof replacement (more than just shingles; in some cases their had been significant wood damage under our previous roofs) and we needed to agree on a single roofing product. Greg and Doug attended a total of three meetings of our association, presented the pros and cons and samples of multiple roofing materials, and described the work that we needed done and why.
DO NOT WORK WITH THESE GUYS.
After both crews were done I took a closer look at the job they had done. There are several places where they were so rough that they scraped the paint off of our trim and eaves. There's a place where they actually broke our cement board siding. There are areas where the metal flashing is bent and flexing up, and one place where it's actually loose and bent down.
Needless to say, I didn't pay him the rest for a job I hadn't approved and had been done very poorly. His response? They had their attorneys put a lien on our house! I tried to contact Joe about it and he told me, "It's out of my hands. You'll have to deal with our attorneys from here on out."
Tonight I noticed a wet spot on our ceiling (see photos). I thought it was pretty weird that we would have a leak with a brand new roof on the house, even with the terrible job they did.
I climbed into our attic and found two frozen cones of ice. Apparently there's a leak where one of the vents goes through the roof. Water is leaking down the duct and then dripping down onto the insulation. It's been so cold lately that the drops were freezing in and on top of the insulation, and then with the warmer weather the ice began melting and leaked through the ceiling. You can see a picture of the ice cones and insulation in the photos.
Against my better judgment, I wrote them a check for half of the repairs halfway through the day they did the roof. Speaking of which, the crew was some sort of traveling band of roofers from out of state. I think their plates were from Minnesota, as I recall. I didn't see Joe at all the day of the job.
He finally sent the invoice to American Family and then they sent the check to us. It was for the amount of the repairs, minus our deductible. I told Joe that I would pay them that amount and then the rest once they fixed all of the problems. He said they wouldn't accept our payment unless it was for the full amount and that there weren't any problems with the job.
Joe told us it would be at least 2 weeks before they could start. While we were still weighing our options he called and said he had a crew in the area and that they would be starting the next day. Keep in mind that we had never signed anything or even settled on a final bid.
I emailed Joe Carlson several times without any response, until finally he called and said, "Uh, yeah... did you email me?" I tried to get him to explain the bid and the different options. All he would say was that they'd be "pretty close" to what our insurance company would pay.
We hired Carlson Projects to redo our screened porch into a 3 season porch. We were so impressed with Stefan and his crew. They were attentive and professional and the work was done on time and done right. All in all, very impressed with the people and the workmanship of Carlson Projects and would hire them again.
Carlson Projects does such a good job! They did my roof at my first place and then did repairs on the roof at our new house after high winds tore off a bunch of shingles. A different company put on the roof and made mistakes which Carlson Projects was able to explain and point out so I knew what to expect for the future. Their prices are very reasonable and they are very quick. I was amazed at how fast they completed the work both times! I highly recommend them!
Meanwhile, Joe sent me the "final invoice." I told him that our insurance company needed the invoice to come straight from them. He told me I had to send it to them, so I did. They refused payment and said it had to come from them. I also told Joe there were problems that would need to be fixed. He ignored that information.
